Purpose and Scope

New Jersey’s Prescription Monitoring Program (NJPMP) is an electronic system for monitoring controlled dangerous substances (CDS) and human growth hormone (HGH) dispensed in, or into, the State of New Jersey by a pharmacist in an outpatient setting.

NJPMP serves numerous purposes, including:

  • Supporting access to legitimate medical use of controlled substances
  • Identifying and deterring or preventing drug abuse and diversion
  • Facilitating and encouraging the identification, intervention with, and treatment of, those addicted to prescription drugs
  • Enabling targeted public health initiatives by identifying “use and abuse” trends
  • Educating individuals about the use, abuse and diversion of prescription drugs as well as the addiction to prescription drugs
